The motivation for many people learning electric guitar is to play the electric lead like their heroes do. Now this is great motivation to learn how to play lead guitar and you can in time play pretty much what you want. For beginners lead electric playing however you need to reduce your sights a bit and think about how best to start playing fantastic guitar solos with your limited ability. The top guitar players are actually very good at what they do and to think you can emulate them in a few hours is foolish.
You can play well known solos
What you need to do is choose your song carefully so that it has a lead solo that only has a few notes and yet sounds great. There are a number of brilliant solos that are chord based or easy to play. Denny Laine's solo on "My Love" Comes to mind as a very good understated guitar solo. Then there is the complete back catalogue of Neil Young. He is the master of the one note guitar solos. It's how he plays that one note that makes all the difference.
A Modern Guitarist To Copy
The Guitarist from Coldplay - Jon Buckland - Has a superb way of making every note count. His riff in the song "In My Place" is basically playing the notes of a chord as an arpeggio and yet that riff became the signature sound of the second Coldplay album. For pure solos listen to "Life is for living" and "Fix You". Because these solos have only 2 or 3 notes in them the learner guitar player can play the notes with little problem. You can concentrate on making those notes sound musical. Jon Buckland is well worth watching and following as a guitarist because he is a musician who makes all the notes count rather than going for fast and flashy guitar solos.
Get a FX Sound Box
To help you feel like you have the right sound you should invest in an FX Sound box. These have hundreds of different sound effects that are added to the basic sound of your guitar. You do not need it to learn to play the guitar but it will help you sound more authentic.
Don't Try To Be Eric Clapton or Jan Akkerman in Your First Week
These guys are virtuoso level and are almost on another planet with their ability. It can take me days to learn a Clapton song and I will never play it as well as him.
