MLK SMS map Under the banner headline, 'Renew America Together, "President-elect Barack Obama and his incoming staff are marking today's federal holiday remembering the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as a day of service," writes The Caucus. You can find service projects at USAService.org. The site also has a blog, where you can text message your plans for today and get ideas from others. Debbie from Delaware "lost my home to an impending foreclosure so I am volunteering with an organization helping homeowners to not fall prey to sub-prime," while Sherri from Illinois will be "volunteering at Hope Haven womans shelter serving dinner in Dekalb Illinois from 5 to 7 pm." Over at BlogHer, Britt Bravo explains that "Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act in 1994 making it a national day of volunteer service," and lists five ways to get involved today.

imageJovaliquilts "thought it would be great if quilters would participate by working on charity quilts that day. It'll be fun to dedicate some time on MLK Day to charity quilting, especially because you'll know that lots of other quilters out there are doing the same." Infinite Body is using her blog as "a way to connect potential arts-loving volunteers with dance and other arts organizations that could use their direct help, particularly in these challenging times." Huffington Post is running a survey asking people why they feel called to serve and what they will be doing today. And Political Animal is "happy that there does not seem to be anything partisan about it, except for the fact that it's Barack Obama who's asking. Some things ought to be affiliated with a political party, but serving others should not be among them."

How are you celebrating and serving? Let us know in the comments.
