Is there one way that's better than another to catch trout? In this article we're going to explore the question of the best way to catch trout. It seems to me that there are techniques that are more effective than others, but the most important thing to consider are the details. When it comes to trout fishing, my 25 years of experience tells me that catching trout is in the details.
So, what do I mean by the details? I mean the little things. The things like any scents that may be on your hands, what the weather and moon are doing, and the size of gear you're using. These things are the detail that I'm referring to, and they are the reason why you catch or don't catch trout. The best way to catch trout is to pay attention to the details and let the rest fall into place.
Let's begin with the scents that could be on your hands. Things like gassing up your car or choking down a cigarette can put very unnatural scents on your hands. These scents will then transfer to your bait or lure and cost you bites on the water. When trout (or most other fish as well) detect any unnatural scent they are much less apt to bite. To make sure that your hands are free of any unnatural scents, simply grab a handful of grass or dirt and rub it into your hands before baiting up.
Next, pay attention to the weather and moon so that you're always on the water at the most opportune times. This tip is one of the best ways to catch trout. The weather and moon have as much to do with trout biting as the type of bait or lure that you choose to use. By learning the simple ways these two forces of Mother Nature affect trout behavior you will have much more success. When it comes to the best way to catch trout this tip will help you tremendously.
Finally we need to consider the size of the gear that's being employed. Specifically the size of your rod and reel and the size of the line spooled on your reel. When fishing for trout your rod and reel should always be ultra light action. The line that your reel is spooled with should be no heavier than six-pound test. Six pound test and lighter is what should be used for trout fishing. I've always preferred classic monofilament line, but other types of fishing line are fine as well.
The bottom line is that the best way to catch a trout is about paying attention to the details. Pay attention to the details and no matter what trout fishing technique you use, the result will be positive. Never forget what Steven Wright said of us anglers: "There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot." No truer words may have ever been spoken.
